Step by step
-
Step 1: Start with a kit
A small kit gives you matched fabric, threads, needle and chart, so you can focus on learning the stitch.
Next: step 2 -
Step 2: Find the centre
Fold the fabric in half each way and mark the centre with a pin or a tacking stitch. Charts usually have arrows showing their centre. Starting in the middle keeps the design centred.
Next: step 3 -
Step 3: Fit the hoop
Loosen the hoop, put the inner ring under the fabric and the outer ring on top, and tighten so the fabric is taut like a drum.
Next: step 4 -
Step 4: Separate the strands
Stranded cotton has six strands. Cut about 45 cm and pull out two strands one at a time for 14-count Aida. Put them back together and thread the needle.
Next: step 5 -
Step 5: Start without a knot
Come up from the back, leaving a 2 to 3 cm tail behind. Hold it flat and stitch over it with your first few stitches to secure it.
Next: step 6 -
Step 6: Stitch the crosses
Each square on the chart is one cross over one Aida square. Work a row of half stitches from bottom left to top right, then come back along the row from bottom right to top left. Make sure all the top stitches lie in the same direction for a neat finish.
Next: step 7 -
Step 7: Finish each thread
On the back, slide the needle under three or four stitches and trim. Avoid jumping long distances across the back, which can show through.
Tips
- Mark off finished areas on a photocopy of the chart.
- Let the needle hang free now and then so the thread untwists.
Questions people ask
What does 14-count mean?
There are 14 squares (stitches) per inch. Higher counts give smaller, finer stitches.
Should I wash it when finished?
If needed, hand-wash gently in cool water, then press face down on a towel.
