What you’ll need

- Your V5C log book (with its 11-digit reference number)
- Your new address
- Your passport, if asked to confirm your identity
Safety first
- You can be fined up to £1,000 if you don't tell DVLA when your address changes.
- Only use GOV.UK: some third-party sites charge for things that are free.
Step by step
-
Step 1: Update your driving licence
Go to Change the address on your driving licence on GOV.UK. Sign in or create a DVLA account and follow the steps. It's free, unless you also want to change your photo (£14, free if you're over 70).
Next: step 2 -
Step 2: Keep driving while you wait
You can keep driving while you wait. The new licence usually arrives within about a week if you apply online. Destroy the old one when the new one comes.
Next: step 3 -
Step 3: Update your V5C log book
Separately, use Change the address on your vehicle log book (V5C) on GOV.UK. You'll need the vehicle registration and the log book's reference number. It's usually free.
Next: step 4 -
Step 4: Wait for the new log book
Contact DVLA if the new V5C hasn't arrived after 4 weeks. Check whether your vehicle tax is due soon, as you may need the new log book.
Next: step 5 -
Step 5: Update everything else for the car
Tell your car insurer, and update any vehicle tax Direct Debit or personalised number plate certificate.
Tips
- Do this when you move, not when you remember: it's easy to forget the V5C.
- If you're changing your name too, you'll need to apply by post rather than online.
